Training-Workshop on Trends, Issues, Concerns and Innovations in Language Teaching in Basic Education

The Guro Formation Forum (GFF) is a group of educators with a deep sense of commitment to the advancement of education in this age of globalization and internationalization. Responding to the demands of the changing times, GFF seeks to strengthen and reestablish classroom teaching as still the best venue for learning. The GFF’s thrust is to ensure excellent, competitive and relevant education in the new millennium. In line with this, GFF will hold a “ Training Workshop on Trends, Issues, Concerns and Innovations in Language Teaching for Basic Education ”, which will be held on April 13-17, 2009 at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. PGMA Signs Trust Fund Law for Philippine Authors

Now, local authors, publishers and the reading public have more cause to celebrate. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has signed into law last 5 March 2009 the National Book Development Trust Fund Act after both Houses of the 14th Congress have approved R. A. 9521 - An Act Creating a National Book Development Trust Fund To Support Philippine Authorship. A milestone legislation in local book development authored by Iloilo City Rep. Raul T. Gonzalez Jr., Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez and co-authored by several members of the House as well as Senators Edgardo Angara, Allan Peter Cayetano, and Jinggoy Estrada, this law will provide authors from all regions of the country a reasonable amount to complete their manuscripts for publication. The NBDB Chairman, Dr. Dennis T. Gonzalez, says: “this will benefit veteran and promising authors working or researching on topics in which local books are either few or non-existent.” There are many subject areas in which local books are insufficien

Rosales where I was born is close to the borders of Tarlac and Nueva Ecija. My forefathers were Ilokanos who migrated to this part of the province at the turn of the 19th century; they had intended to go to the Cagayan Valley but were enamored by the lure of the verdant plains of eastern Pangasinan and they decided to settle there instead. In the early thirties, as a boy, I witnessed this migration; the Ilokanos came in their bull carts with their plows the uprooted posts of their houses and weaving looms. They parked in the town plaza for the night. They were all Ilokanos; some of those who came in bull carts were Pangasinan traders with coconut candy (bocayo) dried fish, salt and bagoong to sell. There was commerce and, of course, intermarriage and one of my cousins married a pretty girl from Calasiao.
