My mother just called me up to remind me that exactly 12:15nn today I was born in Tuliao, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan. An essay on Pangasinan Literature: Emergence of Pangasinan Poets and Poetry In his Nobel Lecture, Czeslaw Milosz pointed out that: “Every poet depends upon generations who wrote in his native tongue; he inherits styles and forms elaborated by those who lived before him.” But that is not the case for me who gave myself to this kind of avocation – that is, to writing poems in Pangasinan. I started writing poetry in my native tongue in 2001. And relied solely on my mastery of the spoken language and instinctive phonetics to come out with my first poetic attempt. Still patterned, however, after the manner of my contemporaries who wrote in English. Enjoyed my few hours stay in Pangasinan. Meeting with the AWARD was a ok :) They're coming out with a "Search for a Hero" biography writing contest and an anthology of Pangasinan poetry in English. Will be back there on the 26th January to discuss more details on their forhcoming projects and programs. Whew! I've revised the manuscript of the Pinabli . Me and my father saw some minor errors that needs to be corrected such as: Tagalized Pangasinan words and spellings. I still trust my "instinctive phonetics" though.

New layout and design for Dalityapi Unpoemed for the year 2003 is up already. I am still working on the archive of the Makata though. Will post the archive link first thing next week. If you have any comments and/or suggestions about the latest layout please let me know. On the other hand, I'll be attending the meeting of the Association of Writers and Authors for Regional Development (AWARD - I) in Pangasinan tomorrow, 19th of January. I'll present to them the final draft of my Pangasinan poetry -- Pinabli tan arum niran Balikas . I am still very hopeful that my book is going to be published this year.

Heights is happy to offer Universes: Tala at Tula , an inter-school poetry reading/concert, on January 22, Wednesday, 5-8 pm at the Rizal Mini-Theatre in Ateneo. We're featuring readers from music, theatre, dance, and literature to render poems from "established and emerging writers." Thus far, musical performers who've confirmed are Joey Ayala, Enrique de Dios, Ebe Dancel from Sugar Free, and Imago; readers to definitely look forward to are Gemino Abad, Jun Cruz Reyes, Jing Castro Panganiban. This is all for the benefit of the literary education project we're setting up, which aims to supplement the need for arts education for underprivileged youth.

In the News: Naming a Crater on Mercury after Pablo Neruda Why name a crater after Pablo Neruda? Our planet is not a single entity separate from the rest of the universe. It is a living celestial body that is dependent on every other living thing. SURIAN OPENS APPLICATIONS FOR BAGUIO WORKSHOP The U.P. Institute of Creative Writing (Surian sa Malikhaing Pagsulat) is now accepting applications for fellowships to the 42nd U.P. National Writers Workshop, to be held at the UP College Baguio from 20 April to 3 May 2003. Fellowships will be granted to writers in English, Filipino, Bikol, Iluko and other major languages in the Visayas and Mindanao. Applicants are advised to submit either 6 poems, 2 short stories or 2 one-act plays. Fellowships are awarded by genre and by language, so incomplete submission in any genre and language will be automatically disqualified. Mixed/experimental forms may also be submitted. Applicants should enter, using a pseudonym, four hard copies (double-spaced, sequentially collated and stapled) and a computer diskette (preferable MS Word) containing the entries (Times New Roman, font size 12). A draft of the piece the I am writing for the Ulupan na Pansiansiay Salitan Pangasinan (Association for the Preservation of the Pangasinan Language.) (L)evolution Pangasinan Literature - the consciousness of our race that remained stagnant for centuries because the Pangasinenses have not kept pace with its own evolution as far as language is concerned. I am suggesting the term (L)evolution to label a serious call to a Pangasinan literary evolution. The biologist P. B. Medawar pointed out in 1960 that our evolution is no longer simply genetic. We must not, therefore, distinguish a biological evolution from a literary evolution: both are biological evolutions. Literary evolution demands that we utilize our learned men, men-of-letters, men and women who have the competence and the knowledge of our language to forge the future of out literature. Ah! finally I am back from a long hiatus...err... holiday :-p Ok. I did a lot of writing while on vacation and I've finished the 120 pages requirements for the Pinabli tan arun ni ran balikas . I think I've written about 16 more poems in Pangasinan in less than two weeks to complete the collection.
