Some 30 language experts are joining a one-day seminar-workshop on Pangasinan dialect to be held at the audio-visual center of the University of Pangasinan (UPang) on March 28. Mel Jovellanos, a historian and Pangasinan language expert, said in an interview with The PUNCH that the activity, dubbed Pangasinan Language Orthography Seminar-Workshop, aims to standardize spellings among the different dialects used in the province. Jovellanos, author of an upcoming Pangasinan-English Dictionary and president of the Dr. Jose de Guzman Tamayo Foundation,Inc. which is initiating the event with support from UPang, said the three dialects spoken in the province are Pangasinan, Ilocano and Bolinao. Among those expected to join the day-long activity include Dr. Ricardo Nolasco, chairman of the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino; Dr. Antonio Tamayo, commissioner for Pangasinan Languages; and historian Restituto Basa. Languages are the very material of poetry constituting the substance out of which poems are made. For poets, this year is therefore the occasion to reflect and act on the extraordinary richness that linguistic diversity offers for their art. February 26, 2008 - THE Philippine Council of Women, Inc.-Pangasinan Chapter has launched the “Search for Outstanding Women Achievers of Pangasinan” for 2008, a project that aims to recognize the extraordinary accomplishments of women in various fields of endeavor.
