29th MANILA INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR

I'll be part of the "Pistang Panitik 2008" slated for Tuesday, September 16, 10:30am-12:30pm, Stage Area 1 at the 29th Manila International Book Fair. The 29th MIBF will be held from September 12 to 16, 2008, 10:00 A.M.to 8:00 P.M. at Halls 1-4, SMX Convention Center in SM Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City. The MIBF 2008's theme is Words without Borders. It celebrates the power of literature to cross boundaries of time, place and culture, through books, through language, readers can live in a world without borders. Gawad Komisyon 2008 Ngayong Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa

Ngayong Agosto, ipinagdiriwang ng bansa ang Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa. Ang pagdiriwang ngayon ay may tema na "Wika Mo, Wikang Filipino, Wika ng Mundo, Mahalaga!" Muling pangungunahan ng Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino ang naturang taunang pagdiriwang na umaalinsunod sa Proklamasyon Blg. 1041. Kaugnay nito, muling bubuksan ang timpalak sa Gawad Komisyon sa Sanaysay-Gantimpalang Collantes na nasa wikang Filipino. Ito ay isang timpalak sa pagsulat ng pormal na sanaysay na itinatatguyod kapuwa ng Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino at Jorge Collantes Foundation kaugnay ng taunang pagdiriwang ng “Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa” (Agosto 1-31, 2008). Ang paksa ng timpalak ay “Wika mo. Wikang Fiipino. Wika ng Mundo. Mahalaga!” Ang mga gantimpala ay ang sumusunod: Una, Php 20,000.00 at tropeo; pangalawa, Php 12,000.00 at plake; pangatlo, Php 9,000.00 at plake; at P3,000.00 at plake bawat isa para sa magwawagi ng tatlong (3) karangalang- banggit. UMPIL to hold its 34th Convention at the CCP

The Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL) will hold its 34th convention at the GSIS Museum of the Cultural Center of the Philippines near the corner of Roxas Boulevard and Buendia Avenue. This will be on 30 August from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Special guest of honor South Korean novelist Bang Hyun-seok will discuss the theme "Trading Words, Tracing Worlds." A meeting discussing the Writers Welfare Act will follow. Call for Papers: 10th Philippine Linguistics Congress 2008

The UP Department of Linguistics will hold the 10th Philippine Linguistics Congress on December 10-12, 2008 at the Balay Kalinaw Conference Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. The conference aims to focus on the most current advances in the study of Philippine languages, and in the application of linguistic theory to anthropology, sociology, psychology, language planning, translation and language education in the Philippines. A registration fee of Two Thousand Five Hundred Pesos (PhP2, 500.00) will be charged per participant or One Thousand Five Hundred (PhP1, 500.00) for students, inclusive of meals (lunch, morning and afternoon snacks), copies of the conference papers, and conference materials (pens, notepads, bags, identification cards, etc.). Soviet dissident writer Solzhenitsyn dies at 89

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Soviet dissident writer and Nobel literature prize winner who revealed the horror of Stalin's camps to the world, died late on Sunday aged 89, Russian news agencies reported. Itar-Tass news agency quoted Solzhenitsyn's son Stepan as saying the writer died of heart failure in his home outside Moscow at 11:45 p.m. (3:45 p.m. EDT). Interfax news agency quoted literary sources as saying Solzhenitsyn died of a stroke. "President Dmitry Medvedev expressed his condolences to Solzhenitsyn's family," a Kremlin spokesman said. Members of the writer's family could not be contacted immediately. For more than 20 years, the bearded World War Two veteran, who spent eight years in Stalin's camps for criticizing the Soviet dictator, became a symbol of intellectual resistance to the Communist rule. His monumental work "The Gulag Archipelago", written in secrecy in the Soviet Union and published in Paris in three volum
