53rd PALANCA AWARDS OPEN

The Palanca Foundation is now accepting entries to the 53rd Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature.

Categories open in English and Filipino divisions are: Full-length play, poetry, essay, one-act play, short story for children, short story and futuristic fiction. The teleplay and screenplay categories are only open in the Filipino division. The short story category is also open in Hiligaynon, Iluko, and Cebuano divisions.

A special youth category is the Kabataan Informal Essay which is open to all high school students below 18 years of age. This year’s theme is “What I Treasure Most in My Family” for the English division and “Mga Bagay sa Aking Pamilya na Mamamalagi sa Aking Puso” for the Filipino division.

Deadline for submission of entries is midnight of April 30, 2003. Entries sent by mail should be postmarked not later than April 15, 2003.

Santiago Villafania is a bilingual Filipino poet who writes in English and in his native language of Pangasinan. Born in Tuliao, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan on 31 January 1971, Villafania graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Pangasinan in 1991. Villafania advocates for the resurgence of Pangasinan as a literary language. His works in the vernacular are some of the most representative, if not among the few that comprise that Pangasinan contemporary literary body.
