GMA to Honor Five New National Artists

On June 25, five notable and revered personalities in the fields of literature, visual arts, theater and film will be added to the roster of National Artists. Virgilio S. Almario (Literature), Alejandro Roces (Literature), Jose Joya (Visual Arts), Eddie Romero (Film) and Salvador Bernal (Theater & Production Design) bested other nominees during the deliberation of the Awards’ Council of Peers. Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo shall confer the National Artist Award during the awarding ceremonies at the Palace Ceremonial Hall, Malacañang Palace at 10:30 am.

Santiago Villafania is a bilingual Filipino poet who writes in English and in his native language of Pangasinan. Born in Tuliao, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan on 31 January 1971, Villafania graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Pangasinan in 1991. Villafania advocates for the resurgence of Pangasinan as a literary language.
