Ulupan na Pansiansia’y Salitan Pangasinan
ULUPAN Officers and members visited the Don Juan de Nepomuceno’s Center for Kapampangan Studies last Nov. 16 at the Holy Angel University, Angeles City. The purpose of the said visit was to get some ideas on how to setup our own Pangasinan Studies Center here in Pangasinan. Kcenter as it is popularly known is supported and funded by HAU, the philanthropist Don Juan de Nepomuceno and if I am not mistaken even the local government of Pampanga.
It’s too bad that our own ULUPAN do no have such support. While some of our pompous politicos aired their moral support, we need more than that. We need Pangasinenses who have a clout with the Pangasinan Officials to help us obtain a government fund for our association. We need Pangasinenses who are still concerned with Pangasinan language, culture and arts; Pangasinenses who can do more than build and beautify cities for cities are nothing without its soul – the language and literature of its people.
Dir. Jaime P. Lucas (DTI) and Dr. Linda Andaya founded the Ulupan na Pansiansia’y Salitan Pangasinan, a cultural and literary association, in 2000 with eight other founding members.
The aim of the ULUPAN is not only to preserve the Pangasinan language per se but also to revitalize our language and to revive our literature, which has virtually disappeared; to bring our beautiful language back to our people; to produce quality and contemporary Pangasinan literature, for us to be at par with the Tagalog, Ilocano, Cebuano, Bicol, Waray, Hiligaynon and Kapampangan writers.
Other objectives of the Ulupan include:
- Acquiring materials which are representative of Pangasinan’s natural, cultural and documentary / literary heritage;
- Documenting, preserving, maintaining and storing collections for future generations;
- Publishing contemporary Pangasinan literature: poetry, essays, short stories and related literary writings through the Balon Silew, the official publication of the Ulupan, anthologies and other local, national and international publications; and
- Linking and connecting with other literary and cultural groups here and abroad
While the Balon Silew serves as the only outlet for our literary expressions in the vernacular to promote the speaking and teaching of the language, it is still not enough to disseminate our mission. We have very limited readership and we cannot increase the circulation at this time because we don’t have funds that will sustain the expenses for printing. Had not our president, Dr. Andaya rented an office for the ULUPAN; we would still be squatting in the grounds of PSU or U-Pang to hold our monthly meetings. The office is still bare, as it needs more chairs, tables, bookshelves and a PC or a computer.
Projects and Other Activities
Aside from the publication of the Balon Silew, some of the Ulupan members have already published their own literary works.
Sponsored the 1st Poetry Reading in Pangasinan in support to the UNESCO’s 2003 Dialogue Through Poetry Week and World Poetry Day last March 21, 2003 -- http://www.dialoguepoetry.org/2003_dagupan_city.htm
Initiated the organization of the Pangasinan Studies Center in Lyceum Northwestern University.
Future projects include: conduct literary workshops and lectures to encourage both practicing and budding writers to improve their craft; and to reach students and the general public who have little exposure to traditional and contemporary Pangasinan literary arts; initiate and spearhead the creation of a Special Library (Pangasinaniana) and Research Center for the Pangasinan Studies Center.
Our association is still very small and almost invisible to nearly 2 million Pangasinenses. In time you will hear our small voices in poetry readings and read our works ritualized in print. Ambitious as it may seem but we hope to bring our language and literature beyond our borders. The Tagalogs, Cebuanos, Ilocanos, Bicolanos, Warays, etc. are doing something to preserve and promote their language and literature, then why can’t we, Pangasinenses?
It is our sincere hope and prayer that generous, motivated grantors and our local government will come forth to pledge substantial contributions to our funding goal, so that the potential of Ulupan na Pansiansia’y Salitan Pangasinan may be realized.
ULUPAN-Pangasinan General Assembly
The Ulupan na Pansiansia’y Salitan Pangasinan will have a general assembly on the 21st of December 2003. We will have the election of new officers in the morning and our Christmas Party in the afternoon.
