Executive Director Cecile Guidote-Alvarez of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) announces the acceptance of entries to the 2007 NCCA Writers’ Prize . The NCCA Writers’ Prize is a biennial grant awarded to six (6) writers, one for each of the following categories: novel, short stories (including children’s stories), poetry, drama, essay (English) and literary biography (English/Filipino). The grant, in the amount of TWO HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND PESOS gross, will assist the grantee during the writing stage of the project. The grant is good for one year, after which a manuscript of the writing project will be submitted to the NCCA for possible publication or staging. The Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino announced today, June 12, the holding of GAWAD KOMISYON 2007, a nationwide yearly literary contest in celebration of National Language Month in August. This year’s theme is: “Maraming wika, Matatag na bansa” (Free translation: A gift of tongues for a strong nation). Aside from the traditional Gawad Collantes for Tagalog essay, this year’s categories include essay, poetry and short story in ten other major languages of the Philippines. These languages are Tagalog-Filipino (children’s short story), Cebuano (poetry and short story), Iloko (poetry and short story), Hiligaynon (poetry and short story), Bikol (short story and essay), Kapampangan (poetry), Pangasinan (poetry and short story), Samar-Leyte (poetry and short story), Meranao (essay), Maguindanao (essay) and Tausug (essay). Tamayo Foundation, Inc. headed by former Pozorrubio Councilor Mel Jovellanos hopes to achieve this mission along with the preservation or revival of Pangasinan arts and culture. Tamayo was behind the success of the Perpetual Help Education System which operates universities and medical centers in eight areas including the big Malasiqui campus, according to Jovellanos, foundation president. First in the foundation's agenda is a conference on Pangasinan culture, arts and language on August 10, 11 tentatively set at Leisure Coast where research papers on the subject will be presented. Winners in the writing competition for short story and poetry will also be announced during the occasion, he said.
