First literary tilt winners awarded on Pangasinan Day

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, April 14 (PIA) --The province of Pangasinan centered this year’s celebration of Pangasinan Day on local literature, featuring the presentation and awarding of winners of the Pangasinan Literary Awards held on April 11 in this town.

Pangasinan Literary Awards or “Kurit Panlunggaring” is the very first literary contest in the province designed to encourage local writers to produce more literary works written in the native tongue as to pay tribute to the beauty of Pangasinan language.

“The Pangasinan Day is one way of renewing the Pangasinenses’ commitment to the preservation of our culture,” cited the provincial administrator Rafael Baraan.

The contest was opened to all writers in Pangasinan and launched last February. Maria Luisa Elduayan, the provincial tourism officer said that they were able to gather 25 entries for essay writing and poetry writing in the youth division and 32 entries for poetry writing and short story writing in the adult division.

Proclaimed as winners for the essay writing category in the youth division are Maria Loudel Biag (from Dagupan City), first place; Jorge Aviles (from Lingayen town), second place; and Danstan Lee Pernes (from Pozorrubio town), third place. For the poetry writing category, the victors are Archimedes Reimann Cayabyab (from San Carlos City), first place; Maria Loudel Biag (from Dagupan City), second place; and Jayson Bustamante (from Binmaley town), third place.

On the other hand, the winners for poetry writing in the adult division are Crissa Zamoranos (from Calasiao town), first place; Ana Lyn Soriano (from Bolinao town), second place; and Glenn Dale Pernes (from Pozorrubio town), third place. Lastly, the victors for short story writing are Alex Romeo Fernandez (from Dagupan City), first place; Alvin De Guzman (from Calasiao town), second place; and Harvie Aquino (from Lingayen town), third place.

One of the winners, Alex Romeo Fernandez is an information writer of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Pangasinan office. His winning piece entitled, “Say Toon Akalmo, Say Toon Abalangan” (The Person Who Found, the Person Who Lost) made him the champion in the short story writing category.

The awardees received cash prizes and trophies from the provincial government. With its resounding success, the provincial government plans to hold this literary contest every year and shall be expanded to other genres in the coming years. (ANL/AMM-PIA 1 Pangasinan)
