The National Commission for Culture and the Arts announces that the NCCA Writers’ Prize is now open for application by Filipino writers. The NCCA Writers’ Prize a biennial grant awarded to five (5) writers, one for each of the following categories: Poetry (Ilocano language), Novel (Filipino language), Essay (Kapampangan language), and Drama (Cebuano language/Bicolano language). The grant, in the amount of TWO HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND PESOS gross, will assist the Grantee during the writing stage of the project. The grant is good for one year, after which a manuscript of the writing project will be submitted to the NCCA for possible publication or staging. The NCCA, in line with its mission to “encourage the continuing development of a pluralistic culture by the people themselves,” will be creating the opportunity to have a direct hand in the development of Filipino literature. At last: 341 years after Charles II named John Dryden the first poet laureate, a woman has been appointed to the most prominent literary position in Britain. Today, at the University of Manchester’s John Rylands library, Carol Ann Duffy was anointed poet laureate by Andy Burnham, the secretary of state for culture, media and sport. “It is a great day for women writers,” said Duffy, who described the laureateship as “tending the flame” of poetry. “It highlights the way that women writers have changed the landscape of literature in this country … though I think guys will be pleased as well.” Ten years ago, she was reportedly ruled out of the laureateship because Tony Blair was concerned about how a gay poet laureate might play in middle England. There are poets who make people appreciate the art and craft of poetry, which is noble. And then there is Vedasto Ocampo, who made it his life's mission to teach people how to write poems. To me, that's beyond noble. It's hard enough to teach people to write prose, but poetry? It's either they are poets or they're not. Poets are born, not made. Well, Vedasto Ocampo didn't think so. He didn't think he was wasting his time when he spent hours, days, weeks, months, years, turning ordinary folks into writers and writers into poets, because, he said, "Buri ku ing abalu yu king ing Dios man poeta ya!" The Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (Palanca Awards) reminds interested writers that they only have over a week to submit their entries for its new categories – Poetry Written for Children in the English Division and Tulang Isinulat Para sa mga Bata in the Filipino division. The deadline for submission is at 12:00 midnight of April 30, 2009. Now on its 59th year of awarding outstanding literary works, Palanca Awards sees the addition of the new categories as crucial in increasing the country’s stock of quality poems written especially for Filipino children. Palanca Awards hopes that developing poetry written by fellow Filipinos, which will hopefully rival foreign poems which have become classic nursery rhymes, will also help in the appreciation of poetry reading and writing at an early age.
