Finally, a Pangasinan full-length movie

Image
By Gabriel Cardinoza Philippine Daily Inquirer F INALLY, a full-length movie in the Pangasinan language has been produced, thanks to the pioneering work of Christopher Gozum, a multiawarded independent filmmaker, who is the movie’s director, producer, scriptwriter, sound and video editor, and colorist. Shot entirely in Pangasinan, “Anacbanua (The Child of the Sun),” will have its premier at the 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival on October 15-25. The one-hour, 44-minute film is among the finalists in the Digital Lokal Section (Philippine digital films) of the competition. Gozum, who was born and raised in Bayambang town, said he used the Pangasinan language in the film because it is the breadth and soul of every Pangasinense. “If a [Pangasinense] stops speaking his native tongue right at the very heart of his homeland or even away from home, he will start to smell like a rotten fish. He is also as good as dead because he had lost his soul,” Gozum said in an e-mail interview. ...

WHAT ARE POETS FOR IN A POST PO-MO SOCIETY?

By Danny Castillones Sillada "Lumapos kaw. Ya tapos. Di kaw mauno." (You will succeed. You will finish. Nothing bad will happen to you.) – Mandaya Panawagtawag Ritual Published in Manila Bulletin http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/219360/what-are-poets-a-post-pomo-society In a far-flung village of Davao Oriental in a remote town called Cateel, there used to live a native guardian of “mangmang” (bamboo instrument). He was called the “Bamboo Beater”, whose task, in his entire life, was to wake up the villagers before sunrise by beating the bamboo instrument. At exactly 4 o’clock in the morning, he would thump the “mangmang’ in a harsh manner and then, the sound would slowly ebb away with melodic beats. The rhythmic vanishing sound would serve as a reminder to the villagers that their endeavors should be fruitful and meaningful at the end of the day. POETS AS THINKERS AND GUARDIANS OF TRUTH Poets today are like Bamboo Beaters, they rouse people’s consciousness from indifference and ...

Reviving 'dying' languages

By DR. FLORANGEL ROSARIO BRAID I had the privilege of being guest speaker at the 62nd anniversary of the City of Dagupan last month. It was a week-long celebration starting with “Labi ya Panangidayew tan Panligliwa” (A Night of Recognition and Entertainment) which showcased the city’s proud heritage in culture and the arts, and recognized achievements towards making the city the center of trade, education, and now, arts and culture in Northern Luzon. What impressed me most was its comprehensive approach to local governance, its focus on its unique attributes – strategic location, human resources, its rich coastal resources, and the manner it had confronted threats from disasters – with remarkable courage and resiliency. It had done this through its past and present visionary leadership. Thanks to Mayor Al Fernandez and Councilor Farah Decano, chair of this year’s celebration for this opportunity to witness the evolution of the city of my birth. Dagupenos are united behind the revival o...

Saving Pangasinan literature

By Gabriel Cardinoza Philippine Daily Inquirer Dagupan City, Philippines—Pangasinan’s writers are in an uphill climb in their effort to save the dying Pangasinan literature. Aside from the dearth of writers in the vernacular, members of the Ulupan na Pansiansia’y Salitan Pangasinan (Association for the Preservation of the Pangasinan Language) say they have not been getting enough support to implement projects that will encourage a literary resurgence. “Pangasinan [writers] today lack the invigorating environment of a literary movement. We are alone in a wasteland … We are a dying tribe on the verge of extinction,” says Santiago Villafania, the province’s leading umaanlong (poet), who is also a member of the Ulupan. With a population of 2.65 million, half of whom are Pangasinan-speaking, Villafania says the province has only three short story writers, two novelists, six poets and one essayist. Only three of them have published books in the last six years. Literary silence “After half a ...
