54th Palanca Awards
The Carlos Palanca Foundation is now accepting entries for the 54th Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. Categories open in the English and Filipino divisions are: full-lenght play, poetry, essay, one-act play, short story and futuristic fiction. The teleplay and screenplay categories are only open in the Filipino division. The short story category is also open in Hiligaynon, Iluko and Cebuano divisions.

A special youth category is the Kabataan Essay, which is open to all youth below 18 years of age. This year’s theme is "If I Were President of the Philippines" for the English division and "Kung Ako Ay Presidente ng Pilipinas" for the Filipino division.

Deadline for the submission of entries is at midnight of April 30, 2004. Entries sent by mail should be postmarked not later than April 15, 2004. Santiago Villafania is a bilingual Filipino poet who writes in English and in his native language of Pangasinan. Born in Tuliao, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan on 31 January 1971, Villafania graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Pangasinan in 1991. Villafania advocates for the resurgence of Pangasinan as a literary language. His works in the vernacular are some of the most representative, if not among the few that comprise that Pangasinan contemporary literary body.
