Reinventing the Myth of Urduja



I've just started writing the Myth of Urduja reinventing it into an epic poem in Pangasinan language. Yes, it is too ambitious a project due to the fact that there is a paucity of available materials written in the vernacular. I would not trust the account of Ibn Batuta but I will to consider the accounts of the Italian missionary, Fr. Odoric.



I am still gathering my materials particularly on the four legendary Kingdoms of Pangasinan, the Amputi'y Layag (white-earred warriors), Ambalanga'y Pagew (red-breasted warriors), and the so-called Kinalakian (women-warriors) of Urduja. There's also the Singgulo, the ancient martial arts practiced by the Kinalakians and the Oasioas (another form of ancint martial arts) which eventually evolved into a dance.

Santiago Villafania is a bilingual Filipino poet who writes in English and in his native language of Pangasinan. Born in Tuliao, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan on 31 January 1971, Villafania graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Pangasinan in 1991. Villafania advocates for the resurgence of Pangasinan as a literary language.
