The collective of artists Sanesociety.org has organized an international contest to discover and promote the most outstanding people in their respective fields. To do so, TALENT SEEKERS, as this project is known, has created the web page www.talentseekers.net so that its members may choose each year the 100 most popular authors/artists in each of the 10 categories of the contest: • Photography. • Painting, drawing, engraving. • Digital art, Net art. • Film, video, animation. • Sculpture. • Music. • Literature, philosophy, journalism. • Installations, performance art. • Web design, graphic design. • Free category. The public voting will commence on 1st January and will end on 31st December 2009. Only then, in January of 2010, will an expert jury determine the position the different artists will occupy in the 10 different rankings in accordance with the quality of their work. In total, 1000 authors will be evaluated taking into consideration the whole of the work exhibited on their own...

Eight students from Emilio Aguinaldo College-Dasmariñas, Cavite, took time out from their Christmas party engagements to attend the re-organizational meeting of the EAC Writers and Artists Circle. The said meeting was held last December 18, 2008, 3/F, Education Room, UPSI Building. The meeting was centered on the plan to revive the EAC Writers and Artists Circle on the third week of January, 2009. UP Centennial Artists, in cooperation with the UP Alumni Association, will mount their third exhibition of the year, which opens on Dec. 18, at the Trade Hall, third floor, Gateway Mall, Araneta Center, QC. The exhibit will feature never-before-seen mother and child pieces from the UP Centennial Artists composed of university alumni and College of Fine Arts faculty and students. It will include works by National Artists Jose Joya and Bencab, and renowned practitioners Cheloy Dans, Ofelia Gelvezon-Tequi, Romy Mananquil, and Janice Young, among others. To complement the visual aspects of the show, a number of talks are slated in the same venue in January. The discussions will focus on the mother and child as a recurring theme in art, gathering students, artists, and teachers from the university.

IN THIS YEAR’S National Book Awards given by the Manila Critics Circle (MMC), the importance of translation was again emphasized. Three books of poetry which otherwise would have been disqualified for the awards were included in the final list because they had English translation from their original Bicol and Pangasinan texts. The MCC is constrained to consider only entries in English and Filipino, and this works of course to the disadvantage of books done in other Philippine languages. Here is where translation does a big service for the dissemination and popularization of regional literature. Indeed, no less than the institutionalization of translation as an adjunct to creative writing must be a priority of government and private agencies concerned with our literary growth. Regional writings are limited in audience—those not familiar with their languages cannot enjoy them. 10 December 2008, Pasay City – The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) announced today that 62 writers are included in the annual literary anthology Ani. Ani, which means harvest in the Filipino language, is a project of CCP’s Literary Arts Division. For its 34th issue, Ani focused on the theme “Spirituality and Healing”, the book launching will be held on December 17, 7:00 p.m. at the CCP ramp. Jose Jason Chancoco ’s pioneering and scholarly work, Pagsasatubuanan: Poetikang Bikolnon, is a koh-i-noor in the canon of Bikol poetics and literary criticism. A rare achievement! This 200-page book on literary criticism in Bicol language will be published this December 2008 through a grant from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts . "Pagsasatubuanan – a coined term derived from the Iriganon word ‘tubuanan’ or the first sprout from a Pili tree seedling found to be a favorite delicacy of kadlagan (forest) roaming kids and much sought after during rural soirees. The term shall stand for ‘katutubo’ or native. THE fifth edition of the English-Pangasinan-Filipino dictionary, authored by Mel Jovellanos, will soon be off the press following the brisk sales enjoyed by the earlier editions. “Its selling like a hot cake its success is really encouraging,” said Jovellanos who embarked on the project to revitalize and preserve the Pangasinan language. Jovellanos said it took him 17 years to put together the first edition, published in March 2002, which was only 350 pages. He has added new words into each new edition, including assimilated words from Filipino, the official Philippine language, and the fifth edition has been expanded to 500 pages. Jovellanos, son of popular Pangasinan writer and former Dagupan City mayor Jose Villamil Jovellanos, said he was inspired to work on this dictionary “because many claim Pangasinan is a dying dialect so we have to preserve and revitalize it”. In the early 1900s, people of different ethnic origins were communicating with each other with an evolving Manila-based lingua franca. Commerce and trade motivated the need for this common language. The elite spoke Spanish or English. In the 1930s the Quezon government chose Tagalog as the basis for our national language, making it in effect the national language. It was to be the symbol of our nationhood, much like the flag and the anthem. It was to be "enriched primarily through the Philippine tongues" although the law also provided for its purification. It was also to be taught in school as a subject.
