F. Sionil Jose's Speech @ University of Pangasinan, February 12, 2009

Rosales where I was born is close to the borders of Tarlac and Nueva Ecija. My forefathers were Ilokanos who migrated to this part of the province at the turn of the 19th century; they had intended to go to the Cagayan Valley but were enamored by the lure of the verdant plains of eastern Pangasinan and they decided to settle there instead. In the early thirties, as a boy, I witnessed this migration; the Ilokanos came in their bull carts with their plows the uprooted posts of their houses and weaving looms. They parked in the town plaza for the night. They were all Ilokanos; some of those who came in bull carts were Pangasinan traders with coconut candy (bocayo) dried fish, salt and bagoong to sell. There was commerce and, of course, intermarriage and one of my cousins married a pretty girl from Calasiao. I got interested in history, having read Rizal’s novels in Grade School, and concentrated on the Revolution of 1896 after I learned that my grandfather was in it. I came to know so man...

DAGUPAN CITY, Feb 17, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- Eminent writer Francisco Sionil Jose, one of the Philippine's national artists for literature, has called for the establishment of a Center for Pangasinan Studies and expressed hope that the University of Pangasinan (UPang) here will spearhead it. Jose, a Ramon Magsaysay awardee for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts in 1980, said the center can record the culture and contribution of Pangasinenes to the national trove. Even as he expressed sadness that Pangasinan is waning as a literary language, he hailed efforts to revive local literature thr...

Translation and Literary Development

IN THIS YEAR’S National Book Awards given by the Manila Critics Circle (MMC), the importance of translation was again emphasized. Three books of poetry which otherwise would have been disqualified for the awards were included in the final list because they had English translation from their original Bicol and Pangasinan texts. The MCC is constrained to consider only entries in English and Filipino, and this works of course to the disadvantage of books done in other Philippine languages. Here is where translation does a big service for the dissemination and popularization of regional literature. Indeed, no less than the institutionalization of translation as an adjunct to creative writing must be a priority of government and private agencies concerned with our literary growth. Regional writings are limited in audience—those not familiar with their languages cannot enjoy them. Linguistic outsiders, for instance, are prevented from savoring the beauty of poetry and fiction done in Hiligay...
