A PANGASINAN Cultural Night dubbed “Itandoro so Pangasinan: Glimpses of Pangasinan Life and Culture” will held on June 19, 6pm at the ChickaRue Resto in Conception Aguila Street, San Miguel, Manila. The event is in honor of the late Perla Samson-Nelmida, whose birth anniversary was June 19, and to mark the end of Rizal's Sesquicentennial. “All these efforts through the decades to promote Pangasinan culture through cultural festivals, formation of organizations such as OLUPAN and its paper Balon Silew would have not been realized if not through the works and ideas of my late mother,” said daughter Ma. Crisanta Nelmida-Flores, a UP Diliman professor and part-time Commissioner for Pangasinan Language with the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino. Dinner tickets are at Php500 each, which covers Pangasinan cultural night food, songs, dances, poetry readings by Pangasinan artists, Tambayo Cultural Group, Matalonggaring Dance Troupe and a tribute to Samson-Nelmida. The tickets will also serve as ...

when seasons are a-changing summer's back into its fold there will i be awaiting on the verdant green & gold on yellow rolling hillocks where i will be the soft breeze the zephyr wind on your locks or the drowsy tenderness that will unpoem the scarlet tune of the lavender spring o sing with me then & let us be one heartbeat throbbing till the showers of autumn fall like the vermillion rain on a tangerine blossom whose name is a sweet refrain & i will be there with you till the blue wings of winter takes its flight & bids adieu to our rhymed days of thunder

The Beloved Idiom | A Reading of Villafania’s ‘Pinabli & other poems’

By Dennis Andrew S. Aguinaldo In his memoir Elegy for Iris, John Bayley revealed that the young Murdoch wanted her first novel to have “something for everybody.” This was, at least for Bayley, akin to the very spirit of Shakespeare’s corpus. Also, I find this phrase the best way to describe Santiago Villafania’s latest book. For in terms of language, advocacy, and aesthetic vision, Pinabli & other poems, indeed has something in hand for everybody. “Pinabli” is the Pangasinan word for beloved, perhaps a single beloved, but the reader will find that the direction of this passion disperses. This book extends itself, encompassing the country, the waxing and waning of its literature, blessing the Pangasinan language, embracing languages in their plurality and mutability (for—as a proper banquet—this book is generously attended by the translations of distinguished well-wishers into Filipino, Ilocano, English, Spanish, and Italian), drawing inspiration from Jose Rizal, Sap...

Dr. Florangel Rosario Braid wrote in her introduction that Villafania’s rise to become the most outstanding Pangasinan poet today is phenomenal. His writings demonstrate a more than usual keen sense of observation about the human nature and the environment around him. Pinabli and Other Poems consists of over 200 anlongs mostly deal with love, which he describes in a language full of imagery and lyricism. Santiago B. Villafania, a bilingual Filipino poe...

By April Montes LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, April 14 (PIA) --The province of Pangasinan centered this year’s celebration of Pangasinan Day on local literature, featuring the presentation and awarding of winners of the Pangasinan Literary Awards held on April 11 in this town. Pangasinan Literary Awards or “Kurit Panlunggaring” is the very first literary contest in the province designed to encourage local writers to produce more literary works written in the native tongue as to pay tribute to the beauty of Pangasinan language. “The Pangasinan Day is one way of renewing the Pangasinenses’ commitment to the preservation of our culture,” cited the provincial administrator Rafael Baraan. The contest was opened to all writers in Pangasinan and launched last February. Maria Luisa Elduayan, the provincial tourism officer said that they were able to gather 25 entries for essay writing and poetry writing in the youth division and 32 entries for poetry writing and short story writing in the adult divisi...
