I just got back from Pangasinan and yes! finally, we've organized our literary group which was named Pangasinan Writers Association and we decided to have the ASIN (written in Baybayin script) as our symbol and logo. Our major project is to create the Pangasinan Studies Center to be based in one of the universities in Pangasinan. One of the objectives of PWA is to acquire materials which are representative of Pangasinan's documentary heritage and documenting, preserving, maintaining and storing these materials for future generation. Pangasinan journalist / historian, Restituto Basa, will deliver his first lecture entitled The Legacy of Limahong to Pangasinan , as soon as the Pangasinan Studies Center (PSC) is set up. He will also be coming out with A Brief History of Pangasinan written in the vernacular. On the other hand, here's a translation of Gonzalo K. Flores' two haikus published in Liwayway, June 5, 1943. salin ed dua'ran haiku nen Gonzalo K. Flores (impala...

I will be in Dagupan City first thing tomorrow, Saturday July 26, to spearhead the organizational meeting of a would-be literary group. Kinda nervous already because I will be joined, hopefully, by some of the prominent writers in Pangasinan. I proposed the name Pangasinan Council for the Culture & the Arts but according to Dir. Lucas, there's already an existing group with the same name organized by the provincial governor. So, we will either have the Pangasinan Literary Arts Council or the Urduja Creative Writers Association . Will also attend the regular meeting of the Ulupan na Pansiansia'y Salitan Pangasinan (Association for the Preservation of the Pangasinan Language) on the 27th in Lingayen. It's a good thing that the storm Harurot is out of the Philippine territory :)

I attended the AWARD meeting last July 19 at DTI Office in Dagupan City. Dir. Jaime Lucas was very pleased with the new AWARD Junior members organized by Dr. Victor Illustrisimo. The AWARD Junior members will help us in the preparation and the production of the forthcoming issue of the AWARD magazine. We also discussed about the Book, Photo & Art Exhibit to be help on Oct. 11-16 at Dagupan Business Center. Our president also suggested the possibility of adopting the Arguillas Residence as one of our major projects. Prior to the meeting, Dir. Philippine Bibliography - Compiled by the Asian Division of the Library of Congress, this classified bibliography consists of approximately 5000 entries for monographic works about the Philippines in all languages held by the Library. Hmmmm... 5000 entries.... that is quite huge and I pressume the collection is still growing. Too bad I couldn't see any works written in my language. Urduja beleaguered and other essays on Pangasinan language, literature, and culture by Rosa Maria Magno is included in the list though when I searched for the keyword Pangasinan. I just finished preparing the materials to be used during the organizational meeting for the Pangasinan Council for the Culture & the Arts (PCCA) on July 19 in Dagupan City. I'm still identifying some key objectives for the organization. One would be the development and management of Pangasinan's natural, cultural and documentary collections. The Ulupan na Pansiansia'y Salitan Pangasinan has not started documenting, preserving, maintaining and storing collections though we are already into publications of contemporary literature via the Balon Silew - the official publication of the Ulupan. I am sure that the would-be PCCA and the Ulupan will soon lead the acquisition of materials which are representative of our province's cultural and documentary heritage.

The establishment of the Ulupan na Pansiansia'y Salitan Pangasinan must be in response to the UNESCO declaration that there should be two approaches to the preservation of cultural heritage: one is to record it in a tangible form and conserve it in archives; the other is to preserve it in a living form by ensuring its transmission to the next generations. The Ulupan should address these two approaches to preserve and at the same time revitalize our language through written and oral literature. I've learned now that the Ulupan is too small a group knowing that most of its members are inactive and that some only joined the Ulupan for the sake of joining and for other personal agenda. Honestly, I am a bit disheartened. I do not how to help in the membership campaign as I am based here in Manila wherein Pangasinan-speaking enclaves are indeed very rare. I could perhaps help if there's going to be a membership campaign in colleges & universities there in Pangasinan. On ...

I am currently moving all my files to a new office computer. I've noticed that my new PC is kinda buggy. Will have to test it for a couple of weeks or so and if something goes wrong I will have to use the old one :) I was able to attend the Ulupan meeting last Saturday in PSU Lingayen. There was a move to give warning to all absentee officers and members. Some of the elder umaanlong (poets) and writers are still against me on the aspect of literary reforms that I am proposing. There are those who believe that I am revolutionizing the Pangasinan literature. Well, I strongly believe that it's about time. On the other hand, I emailed some of my kaluyagans and kabaleyans outside the country to seek some additional financial assistance for the printing cost of the Pinabli tan arum ni'ran Anlong . I am crossing my fingers and ardently hoping. Will be in Pangasinan again on the 19th of the month to attend the AWARD meeting. We didn't have any for three consecutive months no...

I've been browsing the web for quite sometime now hoping to find some writings about Pangasinan literature but to no avail. I'm starting to believe that I am probably the first Pangasinense who posted literary pieces on-line written in my native tongue. Passion and vision drives me quite strongly but I feel like a lone crusader. I guess I need to start a movement so that we can grow in number :) To a Pangasinense who happens to be reading this, I just want to let you know that your language is dying and your literary legacy virtually disappeared. So, what are you going to do about it, huh?
