Our seminar with Dr. R. David Zorc ended today but I might attend his lecture tomorrow at De La Salle University, Taft. I'd surely be very busy in the following days to finish the Pangasinan Dialogs & Drills. On the other hand, I met Hermie Beltran at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) a couple of days ago. I am supposed to interview him but we ended up just talking about the current state of Philippine literature. Later in the evening, Jason and I watched a Tagalog film entitled Seksing-Seksi , one of the restored films undertaken by the Society of Film Archivists (SOFIA) in cooperation with different institutions. My comments on the film? Que horror! :-p

I, too, would like to see Palanca and other literary contests here in the Philippines adopt similar statements. The Associated Writing Programs book contests include the following in their guidelines: To avoid conflict of interest and to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, former students of a judge (former students who studied with a judge in an academic degree-conferring program or its equivalent) are ineligible to enter the competition in the genre for which their former teacher is serving as judge. The Walt Whitman Award guidelines are similar: "Applicants for the award will not be considered eligible if they have been students of the judge or are close friends." Fair guidelines, isn't it? You might want to check Foetry , a muckraking website that aims to blow the lid off the cozy practices of contemporary poetry.

I was not able to attend Dr. Cirilo F. Bautista's book launching yesterday due to a very important work I had to finish. On the other hand, Dr. R. David Zorc invited me to have dinner with his boss, Tom. We're supposed to go to an Italian restaurant but decided to have some Thai food instead. And what would you expect from a lexicographer, a linguist and a poet when they talk about something over dinner? Philippine languages for dessert :-p re: Ubod Series I received an update regarding the Ubod series a couple of days ago, but I am not too enthusiastic about the latest development. I'll have to wait until the entire layout is completed and ready for proofreading. In the meantime, I am crossing my fingers and toes as well.

In Search of Princess Urduja I found these scanned pages from the book Cathay and the Way Thither; being a collection of Medieval Notices of China while searching for some available articles online about Pangasinan's beleaguered Princess Urduja. Pages 233 - 237 are about the brief sojourn of Ibn Batuta in the country of Tawalisi and his meeting with Princess Urduja. Some Pangasinan historians and literati claimed that Urduja's kingdom was in Pangasinan. Most of our historians nowadays, however, do not support such claim and that the Turkish-speaking princess was not from Pangasinan. I believe that Urduja did not speak the Turkish tongue. She may have learned the words Husn misen yakhshi misen (Khush misan? Yakhshi misan?) from her duennas who acted as her counsellors. The line Dawat wa batak katur , roughly translated by Batuta as "bring inkstand and paper" sounds like Pangasinan. But I would literally translate this as "paper and ink here." The ancient w...

Reinventing the Myth of Urduja I've just started writing the Myth of Urduja reinventing it into an epic poem in Pangasinan language. Yes, it is too ambitious a project due to the fact that there is a paucity of available materials written in the vernacular. I would not trust the account of Ibn Batuta but I will to consider the accounts of the Italian missionary, Fr. Odoric. I am still gathering my materials particularly on the four legendary Kingdoms of Pangasinan, the Amputi'y Layag (white-earred warriors), Ambalanga'y Pagew (red-breasted warriors), and the so-called Kinalakian (women-warriors) of Urduja. There's also the Singgulo , the ancient martial arts practiced by the Kinalakians and the Oasioas (another form of ancint martial arts) which eventually evolved into a dance. 36th issue of Blesok|Shine - literature & other arts is now available on-line (in Macedonian and in English). Reinventing the Myth of Urduja
I've just started writing the Myth of Urduja reinventing it into an epic poem in Pangasinan language. Yes, it is too ambitious a project due to the fact that there is a paucity of available materials written in the vernacular. I would not trust the account of Ibn Batuta but I will to consider the accounts of the Italian missionary, Fr. Odoric.

I've uploaded some photos from the Poetry Reading at EAC-Manila last May 24, 2004. This is the second poetry reading I organized this year in support to the 2004 Dialogue Through Poetry Week, World Poetry Day & Pablo Neruda Centenary. On the other hand, I am currently revising the pages of the Malagilion: Soniton Pangasinan and as soon as I complete the 200-page manuscript, it will be ready for publication. Baltog was known for his conquest of ferocious monsters and animals like the "tandayag" that heaves forth rings of fire, the one-eyed cyclops, a wild buffalo, a great crocodile, serpents and other wild beasts that destroyed the crops and livelihood of the villagers. Poetry Reading at the Fudge Jason Chancoco introduced me to Ronald Atilano, a LIRA member, during the first poetry reading last Saturday, organized by kilometer64 at the place called Fudge along España near the University of Santo Tomas. The three of us had an intellectual convarsation about Philippine and regional literature, reklamasyon sa pambansang gunita and other related topics too profound for us to resolve and construe. It ended when it was already their turn to read. Atilano read a couple of his poems and Chancoco performed his "uniberso". Of course, I was asked to read but I did not bring any poems appropriate for the crowd to whom art is much more an incidental source of pleasure. I also met Alexander Martin Remollino there. He is one of the in-house poets of the Makata and a member of kilometer64. I learned that he has a couple of chapbooks already circulating among his friends. Will try to feature his chapbooks here soon. Going back to the poetry reading, it wa...
