I finally met the poet Dr. Cirilo F. Bautista in person at the launching of Tomas 6 in the University of Santo Tomas yesterday afternoon. We had a brief chat about regional and on-line poetry, and about the Nobel. Yeah, thanks to my friend Jose Jason Chancoco for dragging be along UST. It was indeed a poetic experience for my part. And prior to this event, I submitted my poetry entry for the NCCA's Ubod. The results will be released in January 2003. Wishing my self some luck!

Here’s another poem in Pangasinan language. Yes, I am rushing things up to complete my collection. I am coming out with another one already. I’ve not translated it into English though. By the way, I just finished my entry for the Ubod but I've change the title to Balikas na Caboloan . I'm back from a 2-day hiatus. Anyway, let me just give you a summary of what transpired at the Literary Book Writing Seminar in PSU, Lingayen. I was greeted with warm welcome when I arrived at the venue of the seminar. I was ask to register and pay the registration fee in which I've not expected. Quite anxious to reach the 2nd floor of the HRM Training Center and thought of introducing myself to Dr. Andaya, the Director of External, Cultural and Performing Arts (PSU) and the editor of the Balon Silew . She and I exchanged email and text messages a couple of times. She did not, however, recall my name until Dir. Jaime P. Lucas introduced me to the rest of the workshop participants. I was asked to say something about the current state of Pangasinan literature and to recite one of my Pangasinan poems. That I did. The second day was just a series of literary lectures delivered by prominent Iluko writers. Pangasinan literature was not tackled though. The Association of Writers and ...

Tada . Another Pangasinan poem but still in progress. By the way, I'm off to Pangasinan tonight. That's 4-6 hours of road trip minus the traffic. First thing tomorrow I'll be at the PSU for the book writing seminar. I've no idea what to expect. I don't know anyone and I've never been in that institution. Nope, not even during my college days. Two of my poems , one without oneness and sons of Sisyphus , appeared in the Nov. 17 issue of The Sunday Times. Thanks, Ms. Bing Sitoy! In the News: Heiress Donates to Poetry Journal The influential literary magazine ``Poetry'' has rejected Ruth Lilly's verse for decades, but it's not about to snub her latest offering--a multimillion-dollar gift.

Sweet Ubod for Unpublished Writers If you write serious poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and play in any Philippine language and English, have been published in school folios, newspapers, magazines, journals, or anthologies but never in book form with your name as the sole byline, then you have got us covered. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) invites you to be among the thirty (30) talented but otherwise unpublished writers for Ubod The New Authors Series. The NCCA would be delighted to accept your manuscripts of either of the following: 20-40 poems; 5-10 short stories; 5-20 creative non-fiction; or one play on or before November 30, 2002. Your works will be printed in chapbook form, meaning something like 50 pages is allotted for each of your literary debut. The series is really meant to introduce you to the literary community; the chapbook is your first taste of ubod, the sweet core of palm or bamboo, the heart of writing shared with others. I attended one of LIRA's lecture series for the second time with my friend Jason last saturday at the UP Institute of Creative Writing. I chanced to chat briefly with the poet Rio Alma regarding the possibility of having a workshop for Pangasinan literature. Well, there's no chance of having a workshop at this time since there's a dire need for Pangasinan writers and critics. Pangasinan writers, in fact, are virtually unknown in the Philippine literary circles. Pangasinan writers should organize themselves into a group and initiate their own research and workshop. Something similar to LIRA or GUMIL. On the other hand, I submitted some of my poems for possible inclusion in the forthcoming issue of the Little Brown Poetry .

In the News: Edgar Allan Poe descendant hoping to repair author's tarnished image Edgar Allan Poe. The name of this literary giant, considered by many to be the father of mystery and horror, may conjure up overwhelming images of darkness, mystique and terror. For those who have not studied Poe's life, but perhaps are familiar with such works as "The Raven" and "The Tell-Tale Heart," they know him simply as a great writer with his own demons of opium addiction and alcoholism. But for those who really knew him -- in fact, his direct descendents -- they say much of this is simply myth.

epistle to ebard
true poetry must speak in spontaneous speech
like unto the will of the fleeting wind
it sings its own note and tune to teach
the heart what is to be heard
it need not
be expressed to hide mirth and misery
to maintain the manner you learned by heart
nor shall you lack of caution when using
prosaic or archaic wording in your verse
a dead word is dead if it stands alone
but lives if it is constantly used
nor an archaic used in any attempts
in prose or in poetry which may denote
or connote a new meaning worth knowing
never deprive yourself as to ignore
the transient music in your inmost self
and the personae that whispers freely
into th' ears of your imagination
